Whether you like yours grassy and herbaceous, juicy and fruit-driven, or somewhere in between, Sauvignon Blanc simply has to be the go-to wine for summer. The Fine Wine SA repertoire of wines feature no less than 5 Sauvignon Blancs, and while divergent in style, they share the varietal golden thread of signature crisp zestiness and effortless drinkability, providing the perfect refreshment on hot, lazy days spent outside.
Its recognisable clean, tart fruit flavours and fresh minerality has made Sauvignon Blanc universally adored among wine lovers, but the wine didn't always have the trendy reputation it has today. It comes from humble roots in its native Bordeaux, France, where its name was derived from the French word 'sauvage', meaning wild, because the grape grew like a weed throughout the region. Not initially highly rated by local winemakers, it was mostly used in white blends and the famous dessert wine Sauterne. It was only when Sauvignon Blanc travelled outside the borders of Bordeaux, north to the Loire valley and further abroad to places like New Zealand, Chile, California and South Africa, that it really began to shine as a single varietal wine.
In South Africa, where perennial sunshine and outdoor pastimes are in abundant supply, Sauvignon Blanc has long been the white wine of choice among consumers. Sauvignon Blanc also an incredibly food-friendly wine: The bright acidity refreshes the palate, the spectrum of tangy fruit flavours can accompany a wide variety of foods, the alcohol levels tend to be low to moderate, and the herbal notes accentuate food much the way herbs themselves do. The dishes that go well with Sauvignon Blanc also so happen to be the lighter food we typically like to eat during summer, like breezy salads, delicate seafood or grilled chicken and veggies.
So be sure to stock up on those sexy Sauvies for summer – here are some of our favourite picks:
